A Dream Becoming Reality

For the better part of the last 6 or 7 years, there was something tugging at me, and tugging at me very hard to vacate the industry I was formerly in, and work where my passion is.

My former employment was a typical job where the money was very good, but my level of interest in the company, the industry and the product was very, very low.   This had to change.  I was not going to go through life wondering “what if”.  I felt I had too much to offer to keep doing what I was doing.  Too much too offer myself and too much to offer others.  The constant question in my mind was “if I can be this successful in an industry where there is no interest for me, what if I was in a field that I truly cared about”.

The feeling in that moment where I knew I was finished with my former industry and officially moving on to where my passion lies is indescribable.  Its a feeling I think everyone should experience that is pondering moving out of a job where there is no passion.

I have always been a bit of a fitness nut and excelled in athletics.  But,  in the last 3 years or so, when I started helping others, I quickly realized that this is what really excites me. Any time someone asks(or doesn’t) about health or fitness, my level of excitement goes through the roof. There is nothing that gets me going more than helping people improve this aspect of their lives.

Over the last 2 or 3 years, I have been coaching runners for free and helping them achieve varying goals. I can honestly say that to see one of my runners have a successful race far outweighs any satisfaction I get from hitting a running goal of my own.  It brought tears to my eyes when one runner I helped realized a dream of qualifying for the Boston Marathon accomplished this in the fall of last year. When I told him in July while in Sweden, after a run , that he could get to Boston with my help, he laughed at me , not thinking it was possible. He quaiifed on his next race, about 4 months later, running a personal best by more than 30 minutes. I could not have been happier for him.  That moment when we were sitting at my brother’s kitchen table, and me telling him he could get to Boston, is as vivid as if it had happened 5 minutes ago.

About a year ago, I decided that done correctly, with the right motives in mind, I could take my passion to my own business. I really feel people in Vancouver can benefit from a well run Spinning specific studio. For about the past 1 1/2 months, I have been running free classes out of our loft in South Granville. This helps me improve as an instructor while also introducing people to Spinning who have never done it before , and offering classes to those already familiar to it in a a warm and friendly atmosphere.  This atmosphere will be first and foremost when the studio opens.

I have loved every minute of running these classes and take pride in doing everything I can to ensure that anyone coming through the door feels welcome, gets a great workout, and has some laughs along the way(even if the laughs are at me, right mommies?)

Depending on a few factors, I will have my studio open in June or July and something that was once just a passing thought will become reality.
